Sidewalks: Connecting People

In Fahrenheit 451, people are very closed off from each other. Nobody communicates and nobody exchanges ideas. One reason for this is because people do not leave the safety of their homes. They only watch tv and play sports. A simple way for them to get out and talk to each other would be through the use of sidewalks. In Fahrenheit 451 on page five it states, "unused sidewalks." That statement stuck out to me. People do not walk anywhere and they do not get to know their neighbors. Sidewalks connect people to each other. They give people a way to get out of their safety net and talk and exchange ideas. The lack of use with sidewalks also has to do with no front porches. The society does not want to talk and communicate because they don't want to take the the energy to think. Sidewalks connect people to each other and they get people talking and thinking.

  1. I agree with this statement 100%. People really don't take the time to actually care enough to want to get to know eachother. Today all one cares about it whats on t.v tonight, or who's on facebook. People don't take time to recognize the worth of the little things we have. For example sidewalks and porches. If people actually used the sidewalks that the town has, then i think people would take the time to actually get to know their neighbors or people around town. In the beggining of Fahrenheit 451, Montag thought it was so weird and unusual how Clarise actually took time out of the "fun" of the day to talk to her family. I think this is a scary situation because today in our world not very many people take the time to really appriciate one another or take the time to comunicate properly. There may be a simple hello or how was your day, but nothing fancy. In the book, Mildred thought that Clarise got hit by a car, and that was why she was so different than everyone else. This statement stuck out to me. I thought that is the world they are living in so corrupt and unsocial that a situation that dramatic could appear in ones mind. If you connect these concepts and situations to today, we are just like this. We don't take the time to talk to one another. We don't appriciate what we have, even as little as sidewalks. If we just took some time to take a walk instead of driving everywhere and wasting gas, i have a feeling that our world could all benifit from one simple act. We could all share ideas, and possibly even lean something you didn't know from eachother. This is my opinion on this statement about sidewalks and how brainwashed we could all get from technology and newer inventions.

  2. I agree, girls. This is a challenge for all of us to make sure we are not hiding in our own little worlds, but rather are out in our communities, schools, and families reaching out to others to try to make a positive difference.

  3. I agree with molly and erika. Even though I live in the country with no side walks I know thats how my family that does live in town get to know their neighbors and become close with them. I think that our world could possibly come to this. I belive that our world could possibly come to this because we are getting more and more caught up with technology; just like Mildred. We are becoming more advanced in the world of technology today and it could very possibly lead to this. When most people get with their neighbors they usually do not just watch tv. When Mildred and her "friends" get together they're getting together to watch tv. the reason i put friends in qutations is because i wouldn't call the people that i just watch tv with my friends. I would call my friends people i really hang out with and talk with stuff about. When Mildred is on the phone talking to her "friends" they talk about upcoming tevelvison shows. Montag deosn't really have any friends either except Faber and kind of Beatty. Faber was just someone he met one time who use to be an old english professor at one of the last colleges that shut down. Montag liked Faber because he knew about books. Beatty is just someone that montag had works with and talks to him a lot. That is why I think that sidewalks help make many aquaintance.

  4. I would have to agree with your statement Molly because I too lived in the country and felt like I was cut off from everything, even my neighbors that were in my neighborhood.

  5. I agree with Molly completely. On my street we don't have sidewalks; I feel that I'm not very close with the people living around me at all. I see them when I'm outside doing various activities and give them a friendly wave, but other then that I have no idea what their names are. When I look at another neighborhood that is very close to mine, and it does have sidewalks, they know everyone in that housing complex by name. That neighborhood has block parties so they get to know people. I think this would be a great thing for the people in the book Fahrenheit 451 to do. They need to be more active in other peoples' lives so they aren't nervous when they are around others. Sidewalks are also a great way for kids to get exercise by riding their bikes, running, or rollerblading on them. They also are safer then going out on the street and running or etc. Sidewalks are very useful for many activities.

  7. I agree with Molly. But the way i look at it is, the people are so wrapped up in their technology and other stuff that i think even if they had sidewalks it wouldn't change much. Their would be those couple of people that would use it though. I think sam is right when she talks about kids using sidewalks. It gives kids more activities to do rather then sit at school, be lectured to, and play countless amounts of sports. It would give some people a little more freedom to talk to other people and get to know each other. If there were sidewalks and if people started talking to each other, it could get people thinking more. This could affect the way the people live. If sidewalks had always been there, maybe the government wouldn't have put so much control on the people.

  8. I agree with everyone here except Matt. I'm just kinding about that.Sidewalks have been connecting our people for years and without them I would probably never have met some of my friends who are my neighbors.People would no longer stop to get to know one another if sidewalks didn't exist.People would go through the motions of living without ever stoping to learn more about others such as their neighbors because life would constantly be on going for them if sidewalks were taken out. What could be taken out next if sidewalks were taken out?Lunch during school, summer break, anything involving interaction with other people directly could be taken from society and life would virtually be pointless and that is when we as people will seece to be people but more like robots with out carin what other people say or do or even what you say or do and to never pay attension through your life. This is the sad truth of Fareinheit 451.

  9. I agree with everyone well except Chris. I’m just joking! I think if people in our community did take advantage of the sidewalks that they have we would be a lot closer to one another. The fact is many people don’t. People don’t find communicating with neighbors to be fun, or even necessary. Our society is getting worse day by day. New technology is drifting people farther apart from each other. People would rather stay at home and watch tv, or get on the internet. People are content with worrying about themselves all the time and don’t really care what is going on with their neighbors across the street. I think we need to work on communicating more with each other before it is lost completely.

  10. I agree with everyone except Jack. I’m just joking. I think that people have gotten too addicted to using technology. People rely on technology so much that they forget about the ways in which we use to communicate with people. My dad always talks about how all kids do is text these days and that they have forgotten how to communicate with people face to face. For example I live in town and I have a lot of sidewalks by my house. I never really see people use them though any more. It has changed so much because people use to always use sidewalks. Now, however people are just too busy on the internet or on the phone talking to each other to actually walk around and talk to people face to face.

  11. I agree with everyone 100 percent, on that the community is completly closed off from eachother. I think that it is mostly the goverments fault but also i think the the people are at fault to. The goverment is at fault bacause they dont want anybody to talk anyways. some exsamples of this are that in the book is the goverment taking away the front porches off peoples houses. They do this so that peolple do not sit on there front porches and communicate with eachother. I also think that people are at fault to. I think this because people take no effort to talk to eachother. like Molly said they dont even use the sidewalks. This shows that people are never out and never try to communicate. I also think that the people might be scared to socialize to. I think this because the goverment will get rid of you like they did Clarisse. So this is why i think that the people are so non socail with eachother.
